Provinces Affected: Widespread in South Africa, particularly in coastal and inland areas.
Notes:
Furcraea selloa is a highly invasive species in South Africa. It forms dense thickets that displace native vegetation, reduce biodiversity, and impede animal movement. It is particularly problematic in coastal areas, along roadsides, and in disturbed areas.
Agave and Furcraea are closely related genera of succulent plants, often mistaken for each other due to their similar appearances. Here are some key differences:
Flowers:
Agave: Typically have erect flower stalks with bell-shaped flowers.
Furcraea: Have drooping flower stalks with bulbous-shaped flowers.
Plantlets:
Agave: Rarely produce plantlets on the inflorescence.
Furcraea: Commonly produce numerous plantlets (bulbils) on the inflorescence.
Leaf Shape:
Agave: Leaves can vary greatly in shape and size depending on the species.
Furcraea: Leaves are typically sword-shaped and more pliable than those of many Agave species.
