Sweet Prickly Pear

Opuntia ficus-indica

NEMBA: Category 1b

English: Sweet Prickly Pear, Indian Fig, Mission Prickly Pear

Afrikaans: Boereturksvy, Grootdoringturksvy

Zulu: umthelekisi

Opuntia ficus-indica, commonly known as the Sweet Prickly Pear or Indian Fig, is a large, shrubby cactus with flattened, oval pads and bright yellow or orange flowers that develop into edible fruits.

Native to the Americas, it has been widely introduced to other regions, including South Africa, where it has become a problematic alien invasive species. The plant thrives in arid and semi-arid environments, forming dense, spiny thickets that out-compete native vegetation and reduce biodiversity.

Its ability to propagate rapidly through both seed dispersal and vegetative reproduction from detached pads makes it difficult to control. In South Africa, Opuntia ficus-indica poses significant ecological and agricultural challenges, encroaching on grazing land and disrupting natural ecosystems.
