English: Blue-leaf Cactus, Silver Dollar, Silver Dollar Cactus, Silver Dollar Prickly Pear, Sweet Purple Cactus, Wheel Cactus, Wheel Pear, Robust Prickly Pear
Opuntia robusta, commonly known as the Blue-leaf Cactus or Silver Dollar Cactus, is a large, shrubby cactus distinguished by its thick, circular, blue-green pads that can grow up to 30 cm in diameter, and its bright yellow flowers.
Native to Mexico, it has been introduced to various regions, including South Africa, where it has become an alien invasive species. The plant thrives in arid and semi-arid environments, forming dense stands that out-compete native vegetation and reduce biodiversity. Its ability to spread rapidly through both seed dispersal and vegetative reproduction from detached pads makes it difficult to control.
