Historical botanical names: Encephalartos horridus forma trispinosus

Encephalartos trispinosus, or the Bushman’s River cycad develops one or several stout stems, each up to 1 m tall and 25–30 cm in diameter, often leaning and branching at the base. Its pinnate leaves are grey to blue-grey and each leaflet ends in a sharp spine and often has 1 to 3 spines along the lower margin. During coning, one or two bright yellow male cones will appear per stem or a single, yellow-green female cone.

Distinguishing features:

  • Stem(s) up to 1 m tall, 25–30 cm wide, branched at base

  • Leaves 75–125  cm long, grey‑blue, pinnate with spined obovate leaflets.

Overall appearance

A multi‑stemmed cycad forming clumps of stout, often leaning trunks, topped with a crown of grey‑blue, pinnate leaves. A mature plant can develop 4 to 6 stems, with a number of suckers emerging at the base of the plant.


Height

The stem can grow up to 1 metre tall and 25 to 30 cm in diameter.


Leaves

  • Leaf colour is variable depending on which population they come from, ranging from blue-grey to different shades of green.

  • Colour is lighter on the leaf underside.

  • Leaf length 75–125 cm long and are recurved and twist towards the tip.

  • Leaflets shield one another only slightly but can become crowded at the apex.

  • Leaflets have zero to two large lobes on the lower margin. These can be twisted to various degrees.

  • Leaflets are concave transversely on the upper side.


Cones

Cycads produce cones, not true flowers. 

Encephalartos trispinosus is dioecious, meaning male and female cones are borne on separate plants.

Male and female cones are usually solitary, green to bluish green becoming yellowish when mature.

  • Male cones: 25–35 tall by 7–8 cm wide

  • Female cones: 40–50 cm tall by 18–20 cm wide. The scales are deeply wrinkled.


Coning season

The cones emerge in midsummer (January-December in South Africa ). Pollination of the female cones takes place in April-May.


Seeds

The colour of the seeds ranges from pale red to orange.


Soil type:

Well‑drained soils among rocks; tolerates hot, dry climates and frost.

Full sun to partial shade; grows among rocks or scrub in sunny or shaded spots.

Edibility

The seeds and stem (pith) of many cycads are highly toxic if not properly prepared. While indigenous people historically processed certain cycad species for food (fermented flour, "bread tree"), doing so with Encephalartos trispinosus is highly dangerous due to its toxicity and its critically endangered status. It is not considered safe to eat without expert traditional preparation, which is very complex and risky.


Toxicity

Highly toxic. All parts of the plant, especially the seeds, contain neurotoxins (cycasin) and other toxins. Ingestion can cause severe liver damage, neurological disorders, and is potentially fatal to humans and livestock. The leaves can also cause contact dermatitis in some individuals.


Uses:

  • Horticultural: Highly prized by collectors for its ornamental value due to its unique spiny leaves and striking appearance.

  • Traditional: Historically, the pith from the stem of some cycad species was processed to make a starchy food (known as "bread tree"), and seeds were used in traditional medicine, but this requires extensive and dangerous detoxification processes. Given its Critically Endangered status, any removal or use from the wild is illegal and severely detrimental to the species.

  • Ecological: Important component of its specific ecosystem, providing habitat and, historically, food for certain specialised insects.


Ecology:

  • Pollination: Cycads are pollinated by insects, particularly small beetles (e.g., weevils), which are attracted to chemical cues from the cones.

  • Seed Dispersal: Seeds are large and fleshy, attracting various animals such as baboons, monkeys, rodents, and hornbills, which disperse the seeds.

  • Threats: Critically Endangered due to habitat destruction (agriculture, urban expansion), over-collection for the horticultural trade (poaching), and unsustainable traditional uses. They are very slow-growing, making recovery difficult.

  • Protection: All South African cycads are protected by law, and possession or removal from the wild without permits is illegal.


Distribution and habitat

  • Encephalartos trispinosus is endemic to South Africa and occurs in the valleys of the Bushman`s and Great Fish Rivers in the districts of Bathurst, Alexandria and Albany of the Eastern Cape. 

  • The plants grow amongst rocks in full sun and also in shady situations with scrub vegetation. The climate is hot in summer and cold in winter with regular frost. The rainfall varies between 600-725 mm a year which occurs mainly in the summer.


Derivation of name:

  • The genus name Encephalartos comes from the Greek words en, meaning 'in', kephale, meaning 'head', and artos, meaning 'bread'. This refers to the historical use of the starchy pith from the stem to make a type of bread or gruel by indigenous people.

  • The species name trispinosus is Latin, meaning 'three-spined', referring to the most distinctive feature of its leaflets: the presence of three prominent, sharp spines or lobes on the lower margin of each leaflet.

  • Common names like "Bushman's River Cycad" point to its primary geographical distribution. "Three-spined Cycad" is a direct translation of its scientific name, highlighting its key identification feature.

  • Plant in full sun to ensure good growth and cone production.

  • It is drought-tolerant once established but benefits from occasional deep watering during very dry periods.

  • Protect from heavy frost, especially when young.

  • Be aware that all parts of the plant are poisonous, so handle with care and keep away from pets and small children.
