A "living fossil" of the Eastern Cape, the Alexandria Cycad or Dune Cycad (Encephalartos arenarius) is facing a modern threat. This majestic plant, named for its preference for sandy dunes, is critically Endangered. Illegal removal for private collections has halved its wild population in 60 years. Identifying this cycad by its dull green leaves and unique cones is the first step toward understanding and preserving this irreplaceable part of our heritage.
